We have 3 wonderful children aged 6, 3 and 4 months, and are expecting our fourth. Our third and fourth child will be Irish twins, less than 10 months apart. I needed a place to keep the 4 month old safe while I make dinner or run the sweeper, and this seemed a good solution. Prior to buying this, I had been eyeing the Joovy Room 2, the 4moms breeze (plus?) and a square, large contender by Graco. I needed something larger than the standard pack and play, because with three kids and a fourth on the way, the little ones need a safe place of their own, partially to keep them in, but also to keep the bigger kids out.PROS:- The price is very attractive.- Quality does not feel cheaply made, the seams are properly stitched.- My husband was able to put it up in just a second, indeed, one-handedly. I was not, but after he showed me, I was able to set it up in seconds.- It's machine washable! Our 4 month old spat up on it within days of first setup, and I put it in our (front loader, high efficiency) washing machine on the delicate cycle. I put it upside-down on the frame to dry overnight. No blemishes, and clean result.- Large playard- Lightweight. This is so lightweight, I strongly consider taking this to our Thanksgiving and Christmas family gatherings, so that I have a spot to (safely) put baby down.- It has a door! I don't use the door, but our two bigger kids love to be able to join the baby in "baby jail". They know the rules: be careful, no jumping, and only when I am in the room. Baby is easily entertained, and SAFE.CONS:- The bottom is not padded. This is a blessing as well as a curse. When we had to use the playard on our hardwood floor, it was bothersome to have to place blankets in the playard. However, a padded bottom would have made it much heavier, and would not have made it so easy to move. I am going to remove 1 star just for the lack of padding. It does not make it as easy to use on hardwood flooring with little infants.- The bottom is not water-resistant. I am only mentioning this pro forma, since it really is not a big deal. We had the playard out in the backyard, and I put either a water resistant picnic blanket or just a tarp underneath. This worked great.Two days after we got the playard, we had our living room (the only carpeted room in the house) cleaned professionally, and it left us without usage of our family room! During the 2 days of carpet drying and the scotchguard curing, we moved the dining table over to the side and hung out in the dining room during the rainy summer days. However, our hardwood floors led me to layering two thick blankets in the playard to offer our son some padding. I have seen reviews of people putting foam tiles in the playard, which could work really well instead of blankets, though it would make the whole thing less portable. My dad suggested having a foam mattress topper *UNDERNEATH* the playard, so that the bottom is much softer for baby. We might do this at some point in time. However, since we are not using it on concrete, I am very okay with the bottom paired with a blanket. It makes for easier cleanup, too. Our son was able to crawl (at 4 months old!) a little bit, both on the blanket as well as on the teal bottom of the playard without trouble. He has also fallen asleep without any trouble in the playard, even once with his face pressed against the mesh side (pictured).The description does state that the liner (mesh and bottom) is removable and machine washable. However, in an answer to one of the questions the seller states that it is not machine washable. I am not sure if it is or not, but I have washed it within days of receiving the playard, and it held up perfectly well. Also, for the record I would like to state that the safety description also advises against placing blankets inside the playard. We have chosen to ignore this.I would like to offer some advice to parents whose infant/toddler does not like "baby jail". Begin by putting your infant in there, and play with the infant in the playard. Slowly move up to you being outside the gate, but have the gate open. Then move a little bit further. Make sure that the playard is attractive! We have toys that are ONLY in the playard. They stay there, so that they are "exclusive" toys and this gives the playard a certain appeal. This way he knows that it is not punishment, and that I don't "run off" every time he is in the playard. Yesterday I left our infant in it for about 20 minutes while I sat a few feet away, talking to him. He was happy and did not feel abandoned.Also, talk to your infant. I will move the playard to our kitchen (it's large) while I make dinner or do canning. He's safe in the playard and I talk to him. He's happy and safe, and I don't have to keep an eye on him. Win-win. Also, if you show your infant that being in the playard is not a bad thing, he or she will not feel abandoned. And are really buying yourself short moments of freedom to go to the bathroom or to play a game with older children.This is a very useful outcome for any kind of parent. Obviously one should not leave their infant in this playard for long periods of time, but for a catnap and short durations of time such as making dinner or sweeping the floors, then this is a perfect place for your baby. Our son mostly is placed on his tummy, so that we don't run into issues where babyswings or bouncers can create that "flat" spot on the back of the head. The playard gives the infant the opportunity for tummy time, and for strengthening the neck muscles.
