What to watch with your teens on Valentine’s Day

Staying in with your kids on Valentine's Day? Check out these Valentine's Day movies for teens

There’s nothing we love more than grabbing our favorite drink and all the snacks and watching a mushy rom-com on Valentine’s Day. But what if your teens want to hang out with you to watch a movie? Instead of an “adulty” rom-com with scenes you don’t want your kids to see, these Valentine’s Day movies for teens won’t gross them out or create any awkward moments (we hope).

Oldies but goodies

The Princess Bride

This isn’t just one of those kissing movies. There are sword fights, adventures, and hilarious scenes, and it’s one of the most quotable movies that will have your teens saying “as you wish” when you ask them to do something. The Princess Bride also makes a great family Halloween costume if you need an idea.

Little Women

The 1994 version of Little Women is what we’re talking about here. With an absolutely amazing cast in every role, the story of love between sisters and between a mother and her children is beautifully told. Your teens will also get a kick out of seeing some of the “old actors” in their younger days.

Family love

Vivo

Vivo isn’t only an animated movie with great songs that your teens will sing all the time, but it’s an emotional story about the love within a family. And any movie that has an animal as a main character never lets you down.

The Proposal

Yes, the movie is mostly about how amazing Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are. But The Proposal goes deeper into the father-son dynamic, a mother’s unconditional love, and how much grandmothers are the best person in everyone’s family.

Movies about friendship love

Luca

Luca is one of the best movies about unconditional friendship and family that definitely flew under the radar when it came out. Not only visually breathtaking, but the relationship between the main characters Luca and Alberta is a friendship we all wish we had.

UglyDolls

Another animated movie that didn’t get as much credit as we think it deserved, UglyDolls explores loving yourself the way you are and finding your tribe, no matter what that looks like.

OK, a few rom-coms for the older teens

10 Things I Hate About You

If your older teens are totally into the rom-com genre, we have to bring up 10 Things I Hate About You. It has all the teen romance stuff, but the relationship between the father and his daughters, and between those daughters Kat and Bianca, are touching in their own ways.

Always Be My Maybe

If you want a funny, adorable, but at times sad, and overall good rom-com that parents and teens will both enjoy, then press play on Always Be My Maybe. The Keanu Reeves scene alone is worth watching it on repeat.

An at-home movie night with your teen sounds like the perfect way to spend your Valentine’s Day. Not all Valentine’s Day movies need to be gushy declarations of love the whole way through. These teen-approved (and appropriate) movies are the perfect way to spend the day of love.

A person making a list of New Year's resolutions

Are New Year's resolutions still relevant in today's tech savvy, social media age? Turns out the practice of setting a goal for yourself to change or start a new habit still has a place with many people setting a New Year's resolution at the start of every year. New Year's resolutions actually have quite a long track record.

The practice of setting goals when welcoming in a new year date all the way back to the ancient Babylonians. Back then, New Year's Day was celebrated in March, not January. The ancient Romans also had the practice of kicking off a new year with resolutions, as did early Christians. Today, New Year's resolutions aren't necessarily based on religion. Instead, New Year's resolutions are more personal and often involve losing weight, getting the finances in order, ditching a bad habit like smoking as well as decluttering, or organizing the house.
