Your little one is turning 2! Congratulations! Two is a special time in your kiddo’s life. The toddler stage can be challenging, but it’s also super fun. Hosting a birthday party for your soon-to-be 2-year-old will be amazing. Unlike the 1-year-old birthday, where it’s mostly family and adults, your toddler’s upcoming party will be different. At age 2, your kiddo is much more social and will have a guest list from those playdates and mommy-and-me classes you’ve both been attending.

There are so many fabulous 2-year-old birthday themes to choose from, too. Party planning is always daunting, but there isn’t any need to stress. We’ve got your go-to planning tips so everything runs smoothly and toddler party themes everyone will love.

Toddler party planning tips

Before you decide on a fun theme for your 2-year-old’s birthday bash, it’s important to keep these suggestions in mind when planning. Remember, toddlers do have a reputation. There’s a reason why it’s called the terrible twos.

Keep it simple

Whenever you’re planning a party for young children, don’t go overboard. Simple is always best, and that includes the food. Toddlers are very particular about what they eat and have very basic tastes. A 2-year-old birthday party is not the time to experiment with recipes and don’t waste money on a fancy cake. They won’t eat it. Stick with the cupcakes.

Small guest list

Don’t invite your toddler’s entire gym, dance, and soccer class. That’s way too many toddlers. Kids at this get overstimulated easily. Instead, stick to the kids your toddler enjoys playing with. When it comes to a 2-year-old party, try to keep the invites to five to eight toddlers.

Keep it short

It will definitely become a cry fest if you have a two-hour party. Instead, opt for an hour party if possible. However, 90 minutes is doable, but any longer and you’re risking a massive tantrum breakout.

Timing

Toddlers still need naps with the emphasis on more than one. So, a morning party might be a good idea or a late afternoon celebration. You want to pick a time when the guests are well rested upon their arrival and just starting to get tired when those favors are being handed out.

Structure

For a fun and relatively stress-free party for your 2-year-old, keep the party structured. A free-for-all where kids just play with toys is bound to end up with tears and tantrums. Have activities planned if it’s a home party. If the party is at a party place, make sure there are supervised activities for the toddlers ready to go. Have extra hands to help wherever you decide to have the party. Older siblings and teens can be a huge help at a toddler bash. If you have entertainment like a magician, make sure it’s an age-appropriate show. Again, think short. The 2-year-old attention span is not a long one.

2-year-old birthday themes

A theme sets the tone of the birthday party, from the invitations, decorations, and tableware to the desserts and the favors. When it comes to 2-year-olds, you want to pick something colorful and fun. Usually, you can come up with a theme by looking at things your kiddo loves. Here are some of the top 2-year-old birthday party themes to inspire you.

Characters

Is your 2-year-old in love with Bluey? Maybe it’s Paw Patrol, Elmo, Spiderman, the Very Hungry Caterpillar, the Cat in the Hat, or Disney princesses. Whatever cartoon, puppet, or fiction book character your little one is enthralled with can be turned into an awesome party theme. Just head online for character tableware and decorations to dress up the house or venue party room.

Two

Two can be terrible, but this age can also be terrific. So, celebrate your toddler turning 2 with a 2 party. A Two Sweet or Two Cute party is a perfect theme for a 2-year-old birthday. Decorate with brightly colored balloons, making sure to include number 2 balloons. Arrange cupcakes in the number 2 and send the party guests home with two-shaped cookies. You can also go with a Two-Fast theme and deck the halls with lots of race cars. For something a bit more laidback, try a Two-Groovy theme with plenty of bright colors and flowers.

Trains

If your little one is into trains, a chugga-chugga-two-two party is a must. Check and see if there’s a model train museum nearby that offers parties or better yet a scenic train ride. Imagine how excited the guest of honor would be to have a birthday on a train. If those aren’t options, set up a train display or small age-appropriate ones kids can rotate in groups and play with. Train cookies make a tasty party favor.

Go seasonal

Nature can offer its own inspiration for a 2-year-old birthday theme. For January and February kiddos, a winter theme can be a frozen wonderland with snowflakes and snowmen. You can add in Anna, Elsa, and Olaf if your kiddo adores them. A fall theme is another easy one for September, October, and November toddlers. Many local apple and pumpkin farms may even offer party options. Another fall theme is to turn your backyard into a barnyard. Toddlers love farm animals, and an Old MacDonald-themed party is sure to be a moo-valous time.

A spring theme can be full of colors with flowers and rainbows. For summer babies, think beach party. Turn your yard into a beach with baby pools set up with sand or water. Hit up dollar stores for inexpensive toys for guests to play with in each pool. A pail and shovel are a great party favor for a summer-themed 2-year-old celebration.

Under the sea

For little ones obsessed with fish, sharks, or dolphins, get ready to dive into an under-the-sea theme. Sure, you can go with Disney’s Little Mermaid or splash around with a general ocean theme. Don’t forget to serve an assortment of goldfish crackers.

A dress-up party

One thing that many toddlers absolutely love is playing dress-up. So, why not have a party theme that allows all the guests to dress up. Whether it’s Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, or a fireman, invite kids to dress up in their favorite costume for the party. Then, set up age-appropriate backyard games or crafts and have the kids rotate in groups to each activity. Serve toddler favs like chicken nuggets and toddler-sized pizza slices. Be sure to have plenty of juice boxes on hand. Don’t forget to have teen or adult helpers for the games or crafts. It’s a sanity saver.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to 2-year-old birthday themes. At age 2, kids tend to change their minds like the weather. So, pick a theme you’re sure will be a winner with them. The easiest thing to do when it comes to finding the ideal party theme for your soon-to-be 2-year-old is to look at what they love.

While favorite characters may come and go, there’s always a constant, whether it’s trains, cars, animals, fish, or even a favorite book. If you read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar three times a day, imagine how exciting it would be for your 2-year-old to have a caterpillar-themed birthday bash.

veryone has an opinion,n though. A recent Reddit discussion focused on unpopular parenting opinions that ran the gamut from screentime to letting kids do as they please and quite a few controversial things in between. Do men get paternity leave? Here’s what you need to know
We know women take time off for having a baby, but do men get paternity leave?
A parent holding a newborn baby in the hospital room

When a woman finds out she is pregnant, part of the initial planning is figuring out maternity leave, from when it will start to how long it will be. While we immediately think of the time the mom will take off work for the baby, what about the dad? Do men get paternity leave? Here's what you need to understand about dads taking time off work for the birth of a child.
If men get paternity leave, here's how they can take it

There are a few options for the dad to take time off work for the birth of a baby, and it's all pretty similar to how a mother would take maternity leave. There are types of leave dads can't take since they aren't the ones having the medical procedure or going through the actual birth, but there are some workarounds.
Take FMLA
FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) allows mothers, fathers, and non-birthing parents to take up to 12 weeks off work to care for a new child. The time off is unpaid, but your position will be there for you when you return. There are rules and stipulations to use FMLA depending on where you work and for how long, and you may not qualify to use it under certain conditions, so talk to your employer as soon as you find out your partner is pregnant to know your options. FMLA is amazing if you qualify, but please remember it is unpaid.
Use your PTO and vacation time
Another way to take some time off (and still get paid for it) is to use your PTO and vacation time. The second you know your partner is pregnant, start saving up your time. Talk with your HR department to see how much time off you can stack together and see if they will work with you on how to best use your time. If you can't use it all at once, see about peppering days off throughout the week to get you down to only working one to three days a week so you can still be home quite a bit.
Use unpaid time
Another option is to talk to your HR department about unpaid time off. Depending on how long you have been with the company, you could be entitled to an extended unpaid leave or a sabbatical, or your work will let you take time off for certain things like a medical issue or the birth of a child. This is another unpaid way to take time off, so you need to plan appropriately.
