He’s not a regular grandfather, he’s a cool granddad, which is why you may want a name that shows off his personality and is a bit more unique than those traditional choices of grandpa names. After all, while some grandmothers still embrace the traditional monikers like Grandma and Nanny, others have adopted fun new nicknames that better embrace how they feel about this new stage of life. The Kardashian grandkids lovingly refer to matriarch Kris Kardashian as “Lovey,” while names like “Gigi,” and “Glamma” are becoming more and more popular.

If you’ve been searching for the perfect name for the grandfather in your life and don’t think that “Grandpa” or “Gramps” quite suits him, or you’re a soon-to-be grandfather who doesn’t love the traditional nicknames, here are six incredible ideas, from the traditional to the unique.

Things to consider

Grandfathers play such a special role in the family and should have a name that is just as unique, but there are a few considerations. If you decide you don’t want to go by any of the more traditional nicknames, make sure you settle on a name you love and that your family members are supportive of.

Maybe you want to embrace a cultural name, or perhaps you want to start a new tradition. Make sure younger children can easily pronounce the name you choose and that the whole family is supportive of your name choice. You don’t want there to be any tension in the family over a nickname, especially if other grandfathers in the family may have already been using a similar name.

G-Pa

This one doesn’t stray too far from the traditional “Grandpa” nickname but adds a fun, current twist. Plus, if you decide to go the more traditional route as the grandkids get older, this also makes for an easy transition.

Papou

Derived from the Greek word for grandfather, Papous, Papou is a name commonly used for those of Greek origin or who have family members who are Greek, but you don’t have to be Greek to use this sweet nickname.

Peach

Actor Martin Sheen is lovingly referred to as “Peach.” In an interview on The Bobbie Hunt Show, he explained the origin of his unusual nickname stating, “I was always quoting Shakespeare, using highfalutin language when they were young. So they used to call me ‘Grandpeachual.’ And even now, they’ll call me up and say ‘Hi Peach! How ‘ya doin’?'”

Bubba

Bubba is another popular choice of nicknames for a grandfather. The name is relatively easy for little ones to pronounce and is and has such a sweet sound to it.

Gogi

Kurt Russell is another celebrity grandfather with a unique nickname. Russell is called Gogi, which seems to correspond with longtime love Goldie Hawn’s nickname of Gogo.

Pop Pop

Pop Pop may be more common than some other choices, but is also a nice alternative to other traditional nicknames.

Grandparents have more options than ever before when it comes to their nicknames, so make sure to choose one that suits your personality the best. But remember, sometimes it’s the grandkids who come up with the best nicknames, too, so be flexible when it comes to changing things up.

Money in an envelope with a small gift box

Picking out holiday and birthday gifts for kids is always fun. You can still head to the toy store or dare we say, purchase clothing. When kids become teenagers, though, that definitely changes. Teens pretty much despise most presents parents pick out for them. Those birthday and holiday gifts typically go unused, taking up space in the back of the closet.

Ages 13 through 18 are often earmarked for gift cards. Teens enjoy getting gift cards because then they can pick out what they want. There's also another gift teenagers love to get. Cash. Yep, cash is still king. Think back to when you were a teenager. You needed money for movies, fast food your parents didn't want you to eat, and then there's gas once you started driving. The problem with giving cash as a gift is that it feels thoughtless to the gift giver. Sure, the teens are happy, but you feel like you took the easy way out and stuffed cash into an envelope.
